I have a question about my Erin Waterford Renaissance pellet stove. It was working great until this spring when the auger motor stopped dropping pellets. The auger motor still has a sound, but not the turning sound. Would this only be a auger problem or is there something else I need to look at before I order a new auger. Thanks for your help Debra, La Center WA

A> Response from Wood Heat - "Diagnose with deductive reasoning step by step"

Hi Debra,

I wish I could analyze all the possible reasons that your stove is not feeding pellets down the chute from your description but I am afraid that there are lots of possible reason and solutions and further examination would be necessary to avoid "throwing parts at the problem" which might not resolve it and create further frustration.

We cannot offer an analysis program thru email or over the phone but I will give you a few ideas to pursue and you or someone with some mechanical skills needs to dig in and evaluate what is occurring. I hope this helps. I have attached the guide to finding parts which can help you find the resources you will need and the parts list for the Renaissance pellet stove from Whitfield which is the same inner workings as the Waterford Erin. Some but not all of these parts are still available on this older model. Some of the parts can be rebuilt to repair those that are not available any longer.

Do you have a manual for the stove? Often troubleshooting symptoms is covered in these. There may be a technical manual that goes beyond the owner's manual. All of our manuals are listed in the category under documents.

Have you emptied the hopper to see if there is a pile of sawdust on the bottom? The auger cannot feed sawdust only clean pellets. This is the simplest solution and most common problem. Were pellets left in the stove over the summer? That is not advised since they can swell with moisture and make the auger seize up. Have you taken the back off of the stove to watch the auger movement? The auger on that model only runs for a few seconds then stops. Watching the auger to see if the motor is moving it during operation is the place to start. Removing the motor to run it under full power to see if you can hold it from moving with a vice grip pliers will tell you if the gear box in the motor case is stripped out. Removing the auger and clearing out jammed pellets turned to sawdust might be the solution.

See if these ideas lead to a conclusion or further questions. The factory technical department at Whitfield is available if they can talk to someone who is willing to go thru procedures like this and if necessary we can put you in touch with them once the more simple solutions are exhausted.

I hope this helps you get a clearer picture of what you are dealing with and the possible solutions.

Let us know if we can help you further in any way.

Thanks, Bruce

At Wood Heat, we believe that burning wood is the most, efficient, romantic, beautiful and satisfying ways to heat your home. Wood burning can be very economical, while also offering the additional benefits of a beautiful flame, relaxing warmth, romantic ambiance and independence from electrical dependency. If you ever have a power outage you will remain as warm and comfortable as ever.
Regarding environmental concerns, strict EPA regulations have helped wood stoves become popular across the nation. EPA-certified stoves now burn 72-82% more cleanly than those of the past, making wood's former reputation as a dirty fuel obsolete. Wood has a much higher BTU capacity than gas and wood is also a renewable resource. Trees are being replanted at an unprecedented rate, which also helps improve air quality, as trees use carbon dioxide to produce more oxygen.

You can count on wood being around as a reliable and clean source of fuel for years to come. You don't have to be dependant on foreign fuel sources. And you will stay warm even if your power goes out.

TO START-- Clean glass as needed with paper towel and woodstove glass cleaner. (Lay a piece of newspaper below the door to catch any debris.)
1. Fill hopper with pellets. (Pellets can be poured in from a pellet bucket in small quantities or the bag of pellets can be cut open right in the hopper to prevent spillage).
2. Turn up thermostat to DC
3. Pour 2 SCOOPS of pellets in to the burn pot (behind the large front log). It is not necessary to remove the logs.
4. Light the pellets in the burn pot with a torch or lighting material.
5. Close the door (check settings, feed low and draft fan low).
6. Flip switch on panel to on position--check to see red light go on.
7. after the pellets start to burn (2-3 m push start button on control panel).
8. Adjust thermostat to desired temperature after waiting 10-20 minutes for the fire to get established.
9. Turn on the room air circulating fan with the dial control on the panel. Turn to low speed to avoid having it cycle on and off. If it does cycle on and off, you can turn the speed up as desired.
To STOP- Flip the switch on the panel to the off position.
KEEPING THE GLASS DOOR CLEAN--Adjustment of the logs and the draft inducer fan damper flap can change flame path and keep soot on the door to a minimum. Flame directed at the glass may increase soot build up. To clean the glass door; A. Lay a piece of newspaper below the door B. Wipe the door with a paper towel C. Spray some woodstove glass cleaning fluid on the glass D. Wipe the soot off with a paper towel.
HOPPER EXTENSIONS CAN EXTEND BURN TIMES TO THREE DAYS UNATTENDED. If you would like to increase the hopper size you can add a hopper extension to any one of the Natural Fire models. This will allow you to load pellets only once every two or three days instead of daily.
MAINTENANCE
1) As ashes build up in the burn pot, the flame will change its shape and the door will soot over much faster. Remove ashes by sweeping the burn pot with an Earth Stone Burn Pot cleaning tool or a stick from side to side.
2) When the ashes build up in the firebox you can remove them by; A) Remove the logs B) Remove the burn pot by first removing the screws on the top of the burn pot (it lifts out by hand) then lifting the whole burn pot up and out C) Remove the ashes with a scoop or a shop vacuum D) Reassemble burn pot and logs.
3) Inspect the Heat Exchange Tubes (above the logs) regularly to monitor soot build up. When these tubes get heavily coated with soot (1/16 inch or more) they gradually lose their efficiency. Clean these tubes with a bottle brush to keep your stove at its highest efficiency.
4) POWER OUTAGES
During a power outage you can continue to get heat from your pellet stove by using a 500 watt or larger generator. These very small generators can be operated outdoors with an extension cord running into the house to your stove and possibly TV, radio, lights and refrigerator, depending on the generators capacity.
5) If your power goes out and then the stove will not start back up after the power comes back on, you will need to push the manual reset button (check your manual for its reset location).
6) If you find that your stove is putting out more than you need, even though the thermostat is turned down, you can reduce the heat output on the low setting. This is done by filling in the cup at the bottom of the hopper, up to 50 percent, with silicon caulk. Apply the caulk after cleaning all of the pellets and dust out, then let the caulk dry for at least one day. The caulk can be removed later, with a knife, if desired.
7) We have found that the following accessories make pellet burning even more convenient. You might consider purchasing these for your pellet stove: Propane torch, fire starters, pellet scoop, glass cleaner, pellet bucket (coal scuttle), brass polish, hopper extension allow a 100lb. (2 bags) capacity, setback thermostats TP40 warning shelves.

Choosing a new Heater

More info Click Here

Q: What is a federal consumer tax credit?

A: Consumers claim the credit on their federal income tax form at the end of the year. This new credit reduces the amount of tax you owe. The new credit is a reduction of total income tax at the bottom of your return, up to $1500. This tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit available for individuals who pay taxes and who make energy-conscious purchases to improve the energy efficiency of their home.

Note: With regard to tax credits vs. tax deductions, in general, a tax credit is more valuable than a similar tax deduction. A tax credit reduces the tax you pay, dollar-for-dollar. Tax deductions - such as those for home mortgages and charitable giving - lower your taxable income.

Q: When does this tax credit go into effect and how long will it last?

A: The tax credit went into effect January 1, 2009 and is valid only for the purchase of a qualifying biomass stove during 2009 and 2010. The maximum tax credit for the two-year period is $1500. The sales receipt must indicate that the purchase was made between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

Q: Who determined the tax credit guidelines for the qualifying units?

A: The Department of the Treasury, and specifically, the IRS.

Q: Will other wood and solid-fuel appliances (like inserts, EPA-certified wood-burning fireplaces and hydronic heaters) qualify for the tax credit?

A: The IRS did not state that inserts are covered, or are not covered. However, based on EPA's practice of treating inserts and freestanding biomass stoves in a similar fashion, manufacturers may choose to include inserts. At this time (June 2009) it is not clear whether EPA-certified wood-burning fireplaces or hydronic heaters will qualify.

Q: Do all pellet stoves qualify for the tax credit?

A: Any pellet stove that meets the 75% efficiency rating and has the qualifying documentation does qualify for the tax credit.

Q: Are the installation costs, both labor and venting (chimney), covered?

A: Installation is covered as long as it is a required for proper and safe operation of the stove. The IRS is silent on the possible need to replace a chimney when upgrading an existing biomass stove; however, the EPA has a section on its website titled, Installation Affects Efficiency, which retailers and consumers should consult when deciding if a chimney replacement is warranted when installing a biomass stove.

Q. Are biomass stoves installed in new homes, or vacation homes, covered by this tax credit?

A. No. The IRS is very clear that this credit applies only to existing principal residences, thus new homes and vacation homes would not qualify, nor would homes owned as rental units.

Q. If a consumer purchases other products, such as solar collectors or window upgrades, does this mean a biomass stove tax credit can't be taken?

A. The tax credit is an aggregate, meaning the 2-year $1500 total credit can be used for items other than biomass stoves, such as windows and doors, HVAC and non-solar water heater upgrades, and roof upgrades, all of which are in the same tax credit category as biomass stoves. The tax credit for all of these upgrades is capped at $1500 for the two year period. For example, if a taxpayer uses the entire $1500 for a product in 2009, then they cannot use it in 2010 for any other product in that same tax credit category.

Q: Are prior purchases covered?

A: Prior purchases made between January 1, 2009, and June 1, 2009 are covered if the manufacturer offers a certification statement for the product.

Q: Do stoves that are not newly tested for efficiency qualify under the tax credit?

A: If a manufacturer has documentation that a stove has already achieved the required efficiency rating and issues a certification statement for the product, no further testing is required.

Q: Why was 75% efficiency selected?

A: The 75% efficiency was designated by the U.S. Congress in 2005 as part of the Energy Policy Act and was used again for this tax credit.

Q: How is the 75% efficiency requirement determined?

A: The manufacturer of the stove must provide certification that the product tests for at least a 75% efficiency rating using the lower heating value, i.e., the heat value of a combustion process assuming that none of the water vapor resulting from the process is condensed out, so that its latent heat is not available.

Q: What must a manufacturer provide to a consumer to prove that a product is certified?

A: The manufacturer must certify that its product meets or exceeds the IRS efficiency requirement. To do so, the manufacturer of a stove that qualifies for the tax credit may certify to a taxpayer that the component is a "qualified energy property" by providing the taxpayer with a manufacturer's certification statement that satisfies the requirements of sections 6.04, 6.05 and 6.06 of the IRS Guidance found at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-09-53.pdf. The certification statement may be provided by including a written copy of the statement with the packaging of the component or property, in printable form on the manufacturer's website, or in any other manner that will permit the taxpayer to retain the certification statement for tax recordkeeping purposes.

Q: What information should be included in a manufacturer's certification statement?

A: A manufacturer's certification statement must contain the following information:

       (1) The name and address of the manufacturer.

       (2) Identification of the class of qualified energy property (Biomass-Burning Stove) in which the property is included.

       (3) The make, model number, and any other appropriate identifiers of the stove.

       (4) A statement that the component is an eligible qualified energy property.

       (5) A manufacturer's certification statement must contain a declaration, signed by a person currently authorized to bind the manufacturer in these matters, in the following form: "Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have examined this certification statement, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, the facts are true, correct, and complete."

Q: What should a retailer provide and the customer retain for tax purposes?

A: Retailers and consumers must keep exact records of any sale or purchase. Retailers should provide a consumer with the manufacturer's certification statement for the specific product model purchased. A consumer may rely on a manufacturer's certification statement that their products are qualified energy property. A taxpayer is not required to attach the certification statement to the return on which the credit is claimed. A consumer claiming a credit for qualified energy property should retain the certification statement as part of the taxpayer's records. Manufacturers should make this certification document available to consumers on the web, in the product packaging, or in some other easily accessible manner.

Q: Does the stove need to be manufactured in the U.S. to qualify for the credit?

A: No; there is no "Buy America" component to this tax credit.

The IRS Guidance can be found at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-09-53.pdf.

We can get just about any parts still available, but keep in mind many parts are discontinued, especially on stoves made before 1990 epa phase 2 standards came into effect, when parts fail in older(pre epa phase 2) stoves, it is probably a good idea to consider upgrading to a more efficient appliance. besides saving 25-50% annual fuel useage, the feds are offering tax breaks up to $1500 to purchase a new effecient stove! Wood Heat Stoves & Solar has specialized in energy management since 1981. Heating is the single largest residential energy expense but water heating, lighting and cooling are also significant. All of these can be accomplished more efficiently. These energy efficiency improvements can pay for themselves within a few years followed by many years of no or low cost energy.

Water Heating

Solar Water Heating can often pay for itself in 4 years and offer free hot water for 20 years or more! Many systems are designed without a single moving part and silently perform for the life of the home. Solar water heating systems can work well in conjunction with a tankless water heater because only the minimum amount of energy is used to bring the water to your desired temperature.

Solahart L series, roof mounted solar hot water heater

Lighting

“Solatube” skylight tubes utilize their patented technology that is by far superior to any competitor for daylight capture and transmission dawn to dusk even through many yards of their “Spectralight” tubing at angles up to 90 degrees. You will even enjoy beautiful soft light on moonlit nights. Solatubes block UV transmission protecting your possessions and do not allow heat loss or gain. A Solatube can be installed in as little as two hours. Traditional skylights gain too much heat in the summer and lose so much heat during the winter that their lighting contributions are terribly compromised with inefficiency. Solatubes are available in 10″ and 14″ residential and 21″ commercial models with options including ventilation, daylight dimmers and light kits. Consider replacing your noisy bathroom fan with a Solatube with vent kit to brighten and refresh your bathroom. Solatubes qualify for 30% federal energy tax cuts.

10″ Solatube Skylight

Ventilation

“Solar Star” solar powered attic fans pull heat out of your attic as soon as the sun enters the sky and continue all day long evacuating 1200 square feet of attic space at 800 CFM during peak operation. They can be installed on the roof or in the gable. Their quiet operation is a wonderful alternative to noisy, inefficient electric attic fans. SolarStars can be installed in as little as two hours and your savings begin immediately.

PG&E offers large rebates paying for about 40% of the system while federal government offers additional 30% tax credits, making the system capable of paying for itself within 10 years or less and then supplying free electricity for another 25 years or more.
